there exists a movie that is called Spellbound. and despite, or perhaps because of, the fact that it is (1). a documentary and (2). about a spelling bee it is actually a very good movie, by which i mean that it seemed to be well made, had substance, and produced a postive affective reaction in me. i thought i would have a lot more to say about this movie but it turns out that what i have to say boils down to this: i liked Spellbound. maybe you will too.
a dream i had interrupted by waking up this morning:
i am sitting in a booth at a restaurant vaguely reminiscent of Ann Sather. the tablecloth is yellow. i am playing poker (Texas hold 'em) with 2 faceless people. the dealer sits to the left and the third person across from me. i begin throwing dollar bills in the middle of the table for no reason. i am dealt two cards, which are both black aces. the dealer accidentally shows me his cards, which are a king and a queen. i check my cards again, and notice that they are (a). very battered and (b). both the ace of spades. the waitress comes and goes, but when she leaves the dealer is now sitting on my right and there are cards strewn all over the table. i cannot find my cards. i panic. i am rifling through everything on the table trying to find the cards. they are nowhere to be found. i find the cards and when i look up, there have been four cards turned up, two of which are aces. the veins on my neck begin to go crazy. the faceless player across the table seems to be deciding whether or not to fold. i wonder if i am going to give myself away. the hall light gets turned on, disturbing my sleep and i wake up.
